Selection Effects in Periodic X-Ray Data from Maximizing Detection Statistics

چکیده

The Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) records data of exceptional quality on the energy-dependent X-ray pulse profile pulsars. However, in searching for evidence pulsations, Guillot et al. (2019) introduce a procedure to select an ordered subset that maximizes detection statistic (the H-test). I show this can degrade subsequent analyses using idealized model with stationary expected count rates from both noise and signal. Specifically, data-selection biases inferred mean rate be too low, pulsation amplitude high, size these scales strongly amount is rejected true signal amplitude. also alters null-distribution H-test rendering nominal significance estimates overly optimistic. While does not capture all complexities real NICER data, it suggests could important NICER's observations J0740+6620 other faint pulsars (observations J0030+0451 are likely less affected). estimate selection effects may bias $\mathcal{O}(10\%)$ average modulation depth lightcurves like J0740+6620's, as large $\mathcal{O}(50\%)$ fainter change single dataset shift between $-5\%$ $+20\%$. This imply lower limit J0740+6620's radius slightly larger than should be, although preliminary investigations suggest constraints $\mathcal{O}(1\%)$ data.

Periodic Modulations in an X - Ray Flare from Sagittarius

We present the highly significant detection of a quasi-periodic flux modulation with a period of 22.2 min seen in the X-ray data of the Sgr A * flare of 2004 August 31. This flaring event, which lasted a total of about three hours, was detected simultaneously by EPIC on XMM-Newton and the NICMOS near-infrared camera on the HST. Given the inherent difficulty in, and the lack of readily available...

Quasi-periodic X-ray Flares from the Protostar Ylw15

With ASCA, we have detected three X-ray flares from the Class I protostar YLW15. The flares occurred every ∼20 hours and showed an exponential decay with time constant 30–60 ks. The X-ray spectra are explained by a thin thermal plasma emission. The plasma temperature shows a fast-rise and slow-decay for each flare with kTpeak ∼ 4–6 keV. The emission measure of the plasma shows this time profile...

Detection of Osteoporosis in X-Ray image data

–– This thesis approaches the problem of detecting osteoporosis on X-ray images of different patients by means of machine learning. Osteoporosis has become one of the western world’’s most imminent conditions [1] for elderly people, both male and female, as it causes a reduction in bone strength thus leading to a higher risk of broken bones [2]. While effective treatment is still largely unknow...

Li2Ca1.5Nb3O10 from X-ray powder data

Lithium calcium niobium oxide (2/1.5/3/10), Li(2)Ca(1.5)Nb(3)O(10), has been synthesized by conventional solid-state reaction. Its structure consists of triple-layer perovskite slabs of corner-sharing NbO(6) octa-hedra inter-leaved with lithium ions; Ca cations partially occupy the perovskite A sites at 75% occupancy probability. All eight atoms in the asymmetric unit are on special positions: ...
